King Edward VI School recognised in Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2026

7 July 2026

King Edward VI School is delighted to have been commended in the Regional Independent School of the Year: South category at the 2026 Independent Schools of the Year Awards

The commendation recognises the strength of the King Edward's educational experience, where academic excellence is combined with exceptional opportunities beyond the classroom and a deep commitment to developing young people of character, confidence and compassion.

At the heart of the school's approach is its value of Lift Others, encouraging every pupil to use their talents to make a positive difference within the school and the wider community. This ethos was also recognised in the school's Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI) inspection, which identified pupils' "highly developed sense of social responsibility" as a significant strength.

This latest recognition builds on a successful year for King Edward's, which was also named among the Top 10 schools in the South West by The Sunday Times Parent Power guide, following outstanding GCSE and A Level results, and follows last year's achievement of being named a finalist in the Regional Independent School of the Year category.

King Edward's south coast location plays an important role in enriching pupils' learning and broadening their horizons. From geography fieldwork at Calshot and powerboating and navigation courses on the Solent, to collaborations with leading regional employers and universities.

The school's commitment to its local community is equally central to its ethos. Through partnerships with organisations including the Portsmouth Down Syndrome Association, local primary schools and charities across Southampton and Hampshire, pupils are encouraged to use their skills and time to make a meaningful difference. The school raises around £10,000 each year through the student-led Charities Commission and supports younger learners through outreach initiatives.

The Independent Schools of the Year Awards celebrate excellence across the UK's independent education sector, recognising schools that demonstrate outstanding achievement, innovation and exceptional opportunities for pupils.

We now look forward to the announcement of the finalists in September, with the winners due to be revealed in October.
